Russia will appeal to the CAS the sanction of FIFA and UEFA

MADRID, 3 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Russian Football Federation (RFU) has confirmed this Thursday that it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) the suspension of its teams in official competitions by FIFA and UEFA.

Russian clubs and national teams were banned from all FIFA and UEFA competitions “until further notice” on Monday due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This decision led the rivals to promise that they would not play against teams from that country.

Poland, opponent in the ‘playoff’ for a place in the World Cup; and Sweden and the Czech Republic, potential opponents in a hypothetical final, threatened to withdraw from qualifying until FIFA and UEFA made a joint announcement.

But the RFU, which “categorically disagrees” with the suspension and hints at a challenge “in accordance with international sports law”, has formalized the intention to appeal through the CAS. The ban, states the RFU, “had no legal basis”.

And Russia still hopes to participate in the playoff for the Qatar 2022 final later this month, hoping for a quick appeal process in which the RFU will also seek compensation, the country’s federation said on Thursday.

“The Russian Football Union will appeal to the Lausanne Court of Arbitration for Sport against the decision taken by FIFA and UEFA to suspend Russian national teams from participating in international competitions,” the statement said.

“As part of a single lawsuit against the two organizations, the RFU will demand the restoration of all Russian men’s and women’s national teams for all types of football in the tournaments in which they participated (including the qualifying round for the Qatar World Cup). ), as well as compensation for damages, if their presence is established,” adds the publication of the Russians.

“If FIFA and UEFA reject such a procedure, a demand will be filed for the introduction of interim measures in the form of suspension of the decisions of FIFA and UEFA, as well as the competitions in which the teams were supposed to participate. Russians.

“The RFU believes that FIFA and UEFA violated the fundamental rights of the RFU as a member” of both organizations “including the right to participate in competitions (…) In addition, the decision to withdraw the team from qualifying for the World Cup 2022 was taken under pressure from direct rivals in the play-offs, which violated the sporting principle and the rules of fair play.”
