Rublev and Medvedev sign 2-0 against Sweden and against Germany they will seek the final
MADRID, 2 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Russian Davis Cup team defeated (2-0) this Thursday that of Sweden at the Madrid Arena, thanks to the victories of Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev over the Ymer brothers, who sent Russia to the semifinals of the 2021 edition, where they will measure with Germany.
One of the big favorites made things clear in the Davis 2021 Finals, despite not having his best day, double warning, while Croatia and Serbia will meet in the other semifinal. Russia, champions in 2002 and 2006, closed the penultimate crossing and did so on the fast track, in search of a glory almost forgotten as for the Germans, winners of Davis in 1988 and 1993.
Rublev had to sweat off Elias Ymer, whom he beat in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3). The Swede had the first option to take advantage, but Rublev saved that break ball and he broke twice next, the Russian relaxed at 5-4 and serve to sentence in the second set and Ymer forced the third.
The first point of the series was tightened much more than expected and, although the world number five did not give the option of ‘break’ to the Swede, he had to reach sudden death to achieve victory. With 1-0, Medvedev was in charge of closing the series, with no place for the doubles point.
The world number two did not act as such either, but without being his best version he dispatched (6-4, 6-4) to Mikael Ymer, who did have a complicated start due to the aggressiveness of his rival to the rest. Medvedev went 3-1 but quickly got tangled up to 6-4.
The US Open champion put Sweden on the ropes with a 3-0 start in the second set, but Mikael took his grip on these days of competition to hold his own on the track. The Swede left an exchange of ‘breaks’ and did not throw in the towel, but Medvedev prevented the miracle and summoned Russia to Germany in a semifinal with a lot of hunger for Salad Bowl.
