Rummenigge rules out Bayern being able to sign Havertz this year

The chairman of the board of directors of Bayern Munich, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, dashed hopes that the Bavarian team could sign in the near future the German international Kai Havertz, from Bayer Leverkusen.

“I am saying this very clearly: a transfer from Havertz will not be possible for us this year for financial reasons,” Rummenigge said in an interview with the sports station and television station Sport1.

“All European football and also Bayern are currently facing great economic challenges that will last as long as it is not possible to play again in front of the spectators”, explained the 64-year-old leader, while adding that everyone knows “the amount that Rudi Völler has in mind at Bayer Leverkusen.”

Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen will meet tonight in the German Cup final in Berlin. Havertz has been courted for a long time by the Munich team and also by many important foreign clubs.

However, the 21-year-old is unlikely to be taken to Munich this summer, in view of Bayern's expenses with the signing of Leroy Sané in these difficult times of pandemic and an estimated transfer of 100 million euros.

According to Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Völler, there is “nothing concrete, nothing to report” in the “Havertz case”. Völler added that he personally hopes “that he will stay one more year”, but in an interview with the newspaper 'Bild' he said: “We have a contract, if things happen according to the same, you can also leave this summer.”

Rummenigge wishes Völler “that Havertz stay at Leverkusen for at least another year.” “At the end of the day, we are interested in having competition,” said the Bavarian, without ruling out other signings in general or sales of players.

“We need to make transfers with some continuity,” explained Rummenigge. “Nor do I rule out the possibility that we part with one or two players to financially compensate the expenses”he pointed out.
