The forward of the Spanish team Rudy Fernández became this Friday the player with the most caps in the history of the Spanish team, 254 after the match against Latvia, surpassing Juan Carlos Navarro (253).
The captain of Spain broke a historical record for caps (238 of them as games played) at the Indonesia Arena, where Spain lost to the Latvians (69-74), with the madridista adding 5 points and 1 rebound in almost 20 minutes on court. Thus, Rudy was placed at the top of a ranking that will take many years to see changes.
Competing in his fifth World Cup, Rudy kept a record that ‘Bomba’ Navarro had to date (253 appearances on the record with the senior team and 232 games played). Other retired players such as Epi (239 and 224), Felipe Reyes (236 and 212) and Nino Buscató (222 and 203) follow on the list.
The record holder in matches is also in medals, a total of 11 metals with Spain equaled with Pau Gasol, although with a better medal table since he has six golds, ahead of the four of Pau himself, Felipe Reyes and Marc Gasol.
Since he made his debut in an official match at the 2004 Athens Games, Rudy has been present in all the major championships that the team has played except Eurobasket 2017. The Spaniard confessed this season his intention to reach the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, so their numbers are not over yet.
