First trip of the Kings this year. Destination: Poland. Don Felipe and Doña Letizia will attend the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp, which is near Krakow. The historical summitdated Liberation Day, January 27, 1945, pays tribute to the millions of victims of the Holocaust during World War II. Along with the Kings of Spain will be Charles III and other European heads of state.
Felipe VI and Doña Letizia, Carlos III of England, the kings of Belgium, Felipe and Matilda; those from Holland, Guillermo and Máxima; those from Denmark, Federico and Mary; and presidents such as the Frenchman, Emmanuel Macron, the German Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the Italian, Sergio Mattarella, and the Ukrainian, Volodymyr Zelensky. It remains to be confirmed whether the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who by then will have completed his first week in the White House since his inauguration, on January 20, will attend.
One of the first to confirm has been the head of the House of Windsor. From Buckingham it was announced that the king “will attend the commemorations at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi German concentration camp.”
The monarch participated in the London palace this Monday the 13th in the initiative 80 candles for 80 years in honor of Holocaust Memorial Day and proceeded to light a candle. He also met with a 94-year-old survivor of the camps.
