Ron Flowers, Wolverhampton Wanderers legend and world champion with England in 1966, dies

LONDRES, 12 Nov. (PA Media / dpa / EP) –

Former English midfielder Ron Flowers, who was part of the team was proclaimed world champion at the 1996 World Cup in England, has died at the age of 87, as confirmed this Friday by the Wolverhamton Wanderers.

Flowes played in the ‘Wolves’ between 1952 and 1967, winning three league titles and an FA Cup, and playing a total of 515 games, making him the fifth player with the most matches in the club’s history.

In addition, he was international with England on 49 occasions and played 40 consecutive games between November 1958 and April 1963, the World Cup held in Chile included. He was called up by Alf Ramsey for the 1966 World Cup, but did not play for a minute.

“A giant in the field and a gentleman out of it. There will be many people remembering Ron today and all our thoughts are with those who knew and loved him,” said the ‘Wolves’ on their website.
