Romanian Istvan Kovacs will be in charge of refereeing this Wednesday the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals between Manchester City and Atlético de Madrid at the Etihad Stadium (9:00 p.m.), UEFA confirmed this Sunday.
Kovacs, 37, will lead a match for the rojiblancos in the continental competition for the first time. This same course, he dispensed justice in the clash between Sevilla FC and Lille at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán (1-2) in the group stage of the ‘Champions’ and in the first leg of the knockout round of the Europa League between FC Barcelona and Napoli at the Camp Nou (1-1).
For his part, the Spaniard Jesús Gil Manzano has been chosen to referee the other duel on Tuesday, the one between Benfica and Liverpool at the Estádio da Luz (9:00 p.m.). The Extremaduran will have the Canarian Alejandro Hernández Hernández as VAR referee.
