MADRID, 28 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Renfe paid tribute this Friday to the silver medallists of the Spanish men’s basketball team at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and did so with a high-speed train trip to Alicante to attend the current team’s friendly match against the Dominican Republic, in preparation for the Pre-Olympic Tournament in Valencia.
The team that won Spain’s first basketball medal at the Olympics was represented by the players Juan Antonio Corbalán, Juan Antonio San Epifanio ‘Epi’, Juan Domingo de la Cruz, José Manuel Beirán, Andrés Jiménez, Juanma López Iturriaga, Fernando Arcega, Fernando Romay, Nacho Solozábal, José María Margall and José Luis Llorente, as well as the physiotherapist Paco Binaburu and the doctor Cristóbal Rodríguez.
To commemorate the 40th anniversary of this sporting feat, the state railway company has designed a special vinyl for the train. This vinyl decoration features a photo of all of them on the podium at those Olympic Games and a space for them to sign their names.
To complete the tribute, all of them will receive recognition this Friday from the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB) in the run-up to the match against the Dominican Republic, which will start at 7:00 p.m. at the Pedro Ferrándiz Pavilion in Alicante.
As the official train of the Spanish men’s and women’s basketball teams, Renfe facilitates high-speed, long-distance rail transport for the teams and also guarantees them comfortable, reliable and punctual trips.
Federations, clubs and players choose Renfe services to promote the use of the most sustainable means of transport with the lowest environmental impact, being the first consumer of electrical energy in Spain with 100% renewable origin. The company has the Carbon Neutral certification granted by AENOR for electric trains.
