Referee balance: the VAR entered 156 actions and is faster

Velasco Carballo, president of the referees, appeared together with Clos Gómez, director of the VAR, to take stock of the refereeing season. “The season has been difficult and atypical. There has been more media noise than we would like and more than is good for our competition. Our referees have carried out their work in a climate of tension and criticism far above what the reality of each day justified, “began the president of the CTA.

Over the course of the season, the collegiate have found 825 incidents within the area that resulted in a 91.27% success rate (753), while they made a wrong decision in 8.73% (72) of the occasions. The participation of the VAR led to this success growing to 97.45% by solving 51 actions, since I consider that they were decisions in which there was a clear, obvious and manifest error. Therefore, the arbitration success amounted to 6.18% after the intervention of the VAR.

The linemen's accuracy was 95.30% during the season, with an error of 4.70%. With the intervention of the VAR (in offside plays it does not always intervene, only when there are goals or penalties) the success rose to 96.13%. Regarding yellows, 1,858 were shown, with 251 errors. The success was 97.36%. 43 direct reds were shown: 26 by the referee and 17 assisted by the VAR. Six more should have been shown.

“The only way to achieve criteria unification is to watch videos and analyze them together. We have seen 946 video clips with our referees during the season, the previous one was 650,” says the president of the referees.

Var

Of the 380 games that have been played in LaLiga Santander, the VAR intervened in 156 proceedings, of which in 9 the referee upheld his decision (6 for penalties and 3 for offside interference or previous foul) and 5 decisions were improved decisions. This leaves an average intervention for every 2.44 games. Of all the interruptions of this tool, 63 were in factual actions and in 93 subjective, that is, they had to go to the monitor. The referee follows the VAR's recommendation in 94.2% of decisions. “In many countries this figure is 80%. When the VAR referee calls in Spain it is because it is a clear and manifest error,” Clos said.

Assumption interventions

Goals: 65

Penalties: 58

Red. twenty-one

Identity errors: 7

The protests have been reduced and there is 18% less than before the VAR. As for simulations, only 12 have been given. There are 37% less poolings compared to the last season without this tool. The average VAR time is 101 seconds: 126 for monitor plays and 91 seconds for factual. It is 8% faster.

The 10 benefits of VAR according to the CTA

1.There are no offside goals. It is a fact that can have very important consequences for a competition

2.No legal goals are annulled for offside. Attendees are right to delay raising the flag. Not once has it been lifted up and prevented the VAR from entering.

3. Fouls inside and outside the area will be solved with full effectiveness.

4. Serious rough play. What hurt you the most was not seeing an image that seen on television hurt you by a serious entry. They have been detected in an extraordinary way.

5. Violent conduct. Before you could do things behind the referee's back, you can't anymore. That has been eradicated.

6. A ball that comes out before a goal or penalty is no longer given.

7. There are no goals by hand.

8. Very clear penalties that the referee does not see they are detected in a very high percentage.

9. Confusion of identity. There have always been in football and they have disappeared. The consequences can be tremendous

10. Simulation. It has dropped more than 65%. It continues to exist, but less and less.

“The conflicting points of the VAR are penalties. The big problem of those plays is the concept of clear and manifest error. That is the great point of consensus that we must find in the world of soccer,” said Velasco Carballo.
