Real Madrid scratch another 800,000 euros in the Champions League

The Real Madrid accounts will receive with a little joy the elimination of Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona in the quarterfinals of the Champions League. The farewell of rojiblancos and azulgranas allows the whites to improve their relative position in the distribution of the money of the market pool (a concept on which depends the distribution of 15% of the income received by the teams that participate in the maximum continental club competition) and receive an extra 800,000 euros.

That 15% represents a juicy bag of 292 million euros (the Champions distributes a total of 1,950) that is assigned to each country according to the weight of its television market. The four Spanish teams are, in a conservative estimate, 20% (about € 58.4 M). Last season, the concrete percentage was 21.84% (60.8 million).

Once the part that the teams from the same country should share has been determined, the money is distributed according to two criteria. Half, according to the classification in the national league the previous season: 40% to the champion, 30% to the second, 20% to the third and 10% to the fourth. The other half (29.2 million according to our reference calculation) is distributed in proportion to the number of games played in the edition of the Champions League in question. This is the reason why the white club scratches those extra 800,000 euros thanks to the elimination of Atleti and Barça. Real Madrid money for market pool it amounts to 13.14 million of all.

With everything, Madrid settle its participation in the Champions League with total earnings slightly above 84 million euros. The bulk comes from the 35.45 million that correspond to him for occupying the first position of the new UEFA ranking for ten years. To this must be added the fixed of 15.25 million for participating in the group stage. The three victories and two draws of that round bring him another 10.7 million and the qualification for the second round 9.5 million euros more. And finally, add the already referred 13.14 million euros from market pool.

Regarding the estimate for the other Spanish teams, Barça takes 103.1 million euros; Atlético, 94.1; and Valencia, 61.5. Last season, Barcelona earned 117.7 million; the Atleti, 85.6; Madrid, 85; and Valencia, 47.8, according to official UEFA data.
