Real Madrid gets up in the Carpena before the Cup

MADRID, 13 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Real Madrid beat Unicaja (91-92) this Sunday on matchday 22 of the Endesa League held at the Martín Carpena, to recover the taste of victory just before the Copa del Rey in Granada, where its rival will arrive in quarterfinals, the Río Breogán, after beating Valencia Basket (99-82).

Pablo Laso’s team came from three defeats, Barça and Fenerbahce in the Euroleague, plus Valencia Basket, in the last week, and cut the bad dynamics in a hard-fought win in Malaga. A few kilometers away and from next Thursday, Madrid will seek to reconquer the Copa del Rey at the Palacio de los Deportes in Granada.

Heurtel (16), Causeur (16) and Poirier (11) were key to tie the victory in the last quarter. The bad news for the Whites was the injury of Carlos Alocén, who had just returned from a long absence. Laso surpassed Lolo Sainz with 362 wins and became the Madrid coach with the most league wins.

A great Brizuela led Unicaja in the first match with Ibon Navarro on the bench, who breathed new life into a change that was not enough against the leader. The white team is 17-4, while Barça, their biggest rival (14-3), did not play due to the postponed match against UCAM due to COVID cases in the rival.

Meanwhile, the Río Breogán gave itself a good tribute to reach the Cup with strength at the expense of Valencia Basket. The Galicians signed a spectacular second half with an unstoppable Musa (31 points, 5 rebounds, 7 assists). Perhaps this season’s MVP added 47 PIR credits, the fourth-best mark in 10 years.

For Bitic Baskonia it was a positive Sunday as well, as they returned to winning ways against Coosur Real Betis (93-72). Fontecchio had 27 points and 7 rebounds (a PIR of 39) and together with Costello (20) and Giedraitis (18) they gave the Fernando Buesa Arena much-needed joy, inside the ‘Top 8’.

The Betis slow down their reaction to leave the relegation zone and stay at five wins. Urbas Fuenlabrada remained in seven after falling (79-60) to Gran Canaria, led by the yellows by Brussino (17), Albicy (13) and Shurna (15).
