Real Madrid has definitely become the black beast of Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool. As they did in 2018, the meringues beat the ‘red’ team tonight in a Champions League final. If four years ago they won 3-1, today the result has been 0-1.

Carlo Ancelotti has followed in the footsteps of his predecessor in charge, Zinedine Zidane. The French coach led Real Madrid to become European champions for the thirteenth time in that final marked by serious mistakes by Loris Karius at the kyiv Olympics.
A game that will be remembered for the right shoulder injury suffered by Mohamed Salah when he fell into a bad position after a struggle with Sergio Ramos and left him out of action half an hour into the game.
In the second half came the ‘show’ of Karius. The German goalkeeper failed resoundingly at 1-0 when his handball to a teammate was intercepted alongside him by Karim Benzema with his right leg and the ball went straight into the goal (51′). Karius didn’t notice the Frenchman’s presence despite having him right on top of him.
And although Sadio Mané equalized ipso facto (55′), Gareth Bale made it 2-1 with an impressive bicycle kick (63′) and ended up passing sentence in another sung by Karius, who swallowed a shot from outside the Welshman’s area that he folded his hands (83′).
In the 2020-2021 season, Liverpool already had the opportunity to take revenge on Real Madrid, but Klopp also failed in his attempt as he fell in the quarterfinals after the 3-1 recorded at the Alfredo Di Stéfano. The second leg, at Anfield, ended 0-0. Both games were played without an audience due to restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Before these three qualifiers, with today’s final at the helm of Liverpool, Klopp played another three against Real Madrid as coach of Borussia Dortmund. In the 2012-2013 Champions League he faced the whites twice and went through both times.
In the group stage, Dortmund went through to the round of 16 as first in group D after beating them in Germany (2-1) and drawing at the Bernabéu (2-2). And in the semi-finals he made the first leg 4-1 count at Signal Iduna Park, with Robert Lewandowski’s historic poker game, to eliminate José Mourinho’s Real Madrid despite a 2-0 win at the white arena.
However, that feat did not help Klopp to win the Champions League with Dortmund since in the final he lost to Bayern Munich 2-1 at Wembley by conceding a goal from Arjen Robben in the 89th minute.
In the following edition of the Champions League, 2013-2014, the tables were turned. Real Madrid, led by Carlo Ancelotti in his first stage, eliminated Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals after a 3-0 win at the Bernabéu that could not be traced back by the Germans despite Marco Reus’ brace in the first half (2- 0).
Real Madrid reached the final and won the Décima by defeating Atlético 4-1 at the Da Luz stadium in Lisbon after Sergio Ramos forced extra time in added time.
With today’s final, Klopp has faced Real Madrid ten times with a balance of three wins, two draws and five losses. He hasn’t beaten him since 2014. The jinx continues.
