The former American player Megan Rapinoe accused the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, of “physically” assaulting Jenni Hermoso at the celebration of the Women’s World Cup, after the leader kissed the Spanish footballer on the lips .
“What kind of upside-down world are we in? On the biggest stage, where you should be celebrating, Jenni (Hermoso) has to be physically assaulted by this guy –Rubiales–“, Rapinoe declared in an interview with the American media The Atlantic.
The winner of the Ballon d’Or in 2019 highlighted how much that action by the Spanish president “made her think” about what athletes have to endure. “I think about how much the Spanish team had to put up with, some players who got up last year are still not in the team and maybe that was something that pushed them, but they shouldn’t have to go through that,” she remarked.
In addition, the midfielder criticized the effusive and exalted celebration of the RFEF president in the box, along with other authorities. “There was another image that signals a deep level of misogyny and sexism in that federation and in that man at the final whistle, just grabbing his crotch,” she concluded.
