Rape accusation filed against Maradona

The Argentine justice dismissed the complaint of a Cuban, ex-partner of Diego Maradona when he was a minor, who accused the former Argentine soccer idol and his entourage of violence and mistreatment.

Judge Daniel Rafacas considered that Maradona’s death in November 2020 had “extinguished” the legal action on the alleged facts, which were also prescribed for having occurred more than 20 years ago, in the early 2000s.

At the end of November, Justice heard Mavys Álvarez Rego, a mother of two children living in Miami (United States). She explained that she met Maradona at age 16, when the star, then in his forties, lived in Cuba, where he was undergoing drug treatment.

She had indicated that she had been in a relationship with him for 4 to 5 years, citing episodes of violence and, on one occasion, “a rape”. After being “conquered”, she explained how Maradona had pushed her to use cocaine, turning her into an addict in turn. Then, during a trip to Buenos Aires with the athlete in 2001 for a series of tributes, she said that for weeks she was held against her will in a hotel by relatives of the soccer player, they forbade her to go out alone and forced her to undergo a weight-enhancing operation. chest.

The complaint was initially filed by an NGO

The complaint, initially filed by an Argentine NGO, referred in particular to human trafficking, deprivation of liberty, reduction of servitude, assault and battery.

Five relatives of Diego Maradona’s entourage involved denied any involvement. The judge considered that the denounced facts would have been “carried out mainly by Maradona, with the secondary participation of his collaborators between November 9, 2001 and January 19, 2002”, for which he prescribed.

The legal representative of Mavys Alvarez in Argentina, Fernando Miguez, regretted that the magistrate did not summon witnesses. He stressed that the complaint was addressed to Maradona’s entourage and that the death of the star did not extinguish the legal action. He announced to AFP his decision to appeal to the trial court.
