Rahm: “It is an honor that people come to see me instead of celebrating the country and its history”

MADRID, 12 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Spanish golfer Jon Rahm was satisfied after “a great day of golf” on his first day at the Acciona Open de España presented by Madrid, where he finished with a card of 67 strokes (-4), and described it as “an honor” the presence of so many spectators on a day of celebration for “the country and its history.”

“It has been a great day of golf, it is a shame that a couple of putts at the beginning did not go in, but I played very well, very comfortable, it is an honor to be able to play in front of this crowd and if I can play like this from the tee ‘to green’ for the rest of the week and continue shooting good putts, on Sunday I will have good options,” said Rahm after finishing his round.

The Basque regretted not having “made a couple of putts” in his first part of the round, especially after having “options at 10, 11, 12 and 13.” “But it’s golf, it is what it is, I’m sure there have been some that I haven’t hit as well as I would like, but sometimes you get lucky and that’s it,” he stressed.

The Masters champion confessed his surprise at the turnout at his match. “The truth is that being the day it is, I didn’t expect so many people to come, knowing that traffic was going to be complicated, that they were going to cut roads, I didn’t expect so many people,” he stressed.

“In fact, it is quite an honor that they come to see me on a day like this, instead of celebrating the country and its history, that is quite an honor and to be able to do well in front of them is even better, so I hope I can continue doing it like this as well as I have done so far,” added the one from Barrika about a first day marked by the celebration of ‘Hispanic Day’.

The world number three was surprised by the presence of many children and thought that “many” had missed school due to doubts about whether it was a holiday. “It surprised me and I was thinking about it, I didn’t know if they were going to go to class or not, but yes, the truth is that it shows, every year there are more. I also wanted to be a soccer player before being a golfer when I was little, so have that dream is an honor. One of my goals is for golf to be at a higher level when I retire than when I started playing,” he admitted.

Rahm also did not want to make any complaints to the public. “Why is that question? They have all done very well, I understand that they want to take videos and photos and not everyone is silent, nothing more. But that always happens, in the end it is part of what makes this week special, nothing The only problem has been on 18, there has been more than one camera at a time, but as a player I have to do my job and not let it bother me, in the end it is a cheap excuse, hitting a bad shot shouldn’t be be their fault,” he asserted.
