Rahm fights to the end without a prize in a historic tournament of champions

The Spaniard finishes second in the Sentry Tournament against Cameron Smith and the lowest result in the PGA

MADRID, 10 One. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish golfer Jon Rahm was left with honey on his lips this Sunday by finishing second in the Sentry Tournament, the date played by the 2021 champions on the PGA circuit in the field of Kapalua (Hawaii), behind the Australian Cameron Smith.

Rahm, who has been number one in the world for 32 weeks, will remain at the top of the ranking despite the fact that Maui resisted the appointment of champions on the island. The field for punchers suffered the talent of Barrika, who on Saturday made the record of the route (61 strokes) to co-lead with Smith.

The Australian held up the push from number one and posted a pair of rental shots on Sunday’s first nine holes. Rahm pressed in the second round, where he cemented his display the day before, but did not derail his rival. The Spanish pressed until the last hole, where he needed the ‘eagle’.

Rahm signed the ‘birdie’ and, as in several holes before, he tied for the lead, transferring the pressure to Smith. The Australian’s last putt was one meter and he did not miss to win by the minimum in the first tournament of 2022 with -34 strokes, the lowest result in the history of the PGA Tour. Rahm stayed at -33 and fellow Australian Matt Jones was third with -32.

The Spanish golfer, who in 2021 won his first ‘major’ with the US Open, had not competed since mid-October and made it clear that in 2022 he promises to continue fighting every Sunday.
