Rafael Amargo’s 48 “horrible” first hours in prison: methamphetamine and anguish crisis

Jesús Rafael García Hernández, better known as Rafael Amargo (Valderrubio, Granada, January 3, 1975), after being admitted to the Soto del Real prison, he has experienced the worst 48 hours of his 48 years of life. The dancer does not take well to being a prisoner and he found his first two nights “terrible”, according to sources close to Jaime Caballero, his lawyer.

At the moment, he is a preventive prisoner but the Prosecutor’s Office requests for him 9 years in prison for a crime against public health. In the car that took him to Madrid V Penitentiary Center It is taken into account that the bailaor failed to comply with the precautionary measure of signing in the Court of Instruction No. 48 of Madrid. The artist’s defense maintains that he did not appear due to “the clinical picture that he presented due to a phobia of the press.” The forensic doctor who signs Amargo’s psychic reports speaks of the “situation of crisis, of anguish, quite serious that sometimes prevents him from socializing.” This situation can worsen while incarcerated, according to his lawyer.

Strict schedule, “intimate communications” once a month and ten calls a week

This Thursday, he did not suspect the immediate fate that awaited him when he appeared at the Provincial Court of Madrid for a viewing. But the Prosecutor’s Office ordered his immediate provisional arrest, arguing that he observed a “risk of flight” and, as we said, that Amargo had repeatedly not respected the imposition of signing weekly at judicial offices; which, in practice, is a “breach” of the order.

He spent the first day in the admission module, where his fingerprints and photographs were taken for his file and personal file. He was also searched and the belongings he brought were searched. He also underwent a medical examination and was interviewed by a social worker, an educator and a psychologist.

On Friday he was transferred from the module. Amargo, like the rest of the prisoners, has strictly marked the times at which he must get up or eat meals. Apart from contacts with his lawyer, he can have visits in the prison rooms twice a week for 20 minutes or once for 40 minutes during the weekend. “Intimate communications” are limited to one every thirty days. He can also make ten phone calls a week of five minutes each to numbers previously authorized by Prisons.

Methamphetamine Addiction and Detoxification Treatment

“He had to sign on the 1st and 15th of each month,” recalls his lawyer. And he admits that his client did not show up on several occasions but justifies this by alluding to his “psychological situation”, a consequence of his addiction to methamphetamine. According to certificates presented by his defense, Rafael is undergoing detoxification treatment.

The imprisoned Granada artist is innocent until proven otherwise because there is no sentence. There hasn’t even been a trial. It is set for next April 8. Amargo rejected a agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office to reduce punishment if he recognized the facts.

However, the freedom he enjoyed until Thursday was subject to the measures imposed by the judge on June 7. Amargo faces accusations of being leader of a criminal organization that trafficked drugs which was sold from his apartment in the Malasaña neighborhood, in Madrid.

As reported by journalist Nacho Abad, the bailaor went this Thursday morning to collect the resolution but was detained and forced to remain in the cells of the Court at first. Later, at noon, he was transferred in a van to Soto del Real, where he spent his first two nights. His lawyer was scheduled to speak with his client this Saturday. As we already explained, Amargo’s lawyer maintains that the choreographer’s mental health is incompatible with being locked up in prison. He supplication resource What can get Amargo de Soto out of Real is based precisely on the dancer’s mental health. The lawyer has already prepared it and will present it this Monday.
