Pumas thrash New England and qualify after penalties

The Pumas UNAM thrashed this Wednesday by (3-0) to New England Revolutionwith two goals from Argentine Juan Ignacio Dinenno, and won the penalty shootout to qualify for the semifinal of the Concacaf Champions League.

Dinenno, twice, and Sebastián Saucedo, once, scored for the Mexicans, who won on penalties (4-3) with goals from Arturo Ortiz, Alan Mozo and the Argentines Nicolás Freire and Dinenno.

In their stadium, the Mexicans, who had possession 66-34 in the first half, took advantage in the midfield in a duel that began with few arrivals in the area.

Omar Islas entered from the right wing in the 33rd minute and gave the Brazilian Rogerio a ball, who gave Dinenno a lethal pass with a touch of his right leg for him (1-0).

Pumas was close to the second goal in the second half. He got it in the 49th minute with a right foot shot from Dinenno, on another assist from Rogerio.

In a mistake by the defense, with a bad rebound by Brandn Bye, the Mexicans sealed it (3-0) in the 60th minute, with a cross shot by Saucedo, which turned the stadium into a madhouse, euphoric because the team home matched the tie.

The Revolution coach, Bruce Arena, advanced lines in search of a goal, but the Pumas remained organized and continued with their offensive proposal.

The final minutes were back and forth. In discount time, goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera saved the Pumas by stopping a shot by Omar González.

The win tied the series 3-3 and caused the tiebreaker on penalties. Talavera saved Thomas Mc Namara’s shot, while Sebastian Lletget shot wide, while goalkeeper Earl Edwards saved Efraín Velarde’s shot.

In the semifinals, the Pumas will face Cruz Azul, who eliminated Montreal (2-1).
