'Professor' Gerard Nus to lead NorthEast United

Gerard Nus He will lead NorthEast United. The Guwahati-based Indian club announced today the hiring of the Spanish coach, whom it presented with the image of 'the professor', star of the prestigious series 'La Casa de Papel'. “I am very excited to begin this new challenge as a coach,” added Nus, who at 35 years he will become the youngest coach in the history of the Indian club.

With his Indian adventure, Gerard Nus will complete a world tour that has led him to work on five continents. He began his career in the lower ranks of Liverpool, from where he went to South Korea to be Jung Hae-seong's assistant at Chunnam Dragons. In Australia he served as second to John Aloisi at Melbourne Heart, the same role he played alongside Avram Grant in the Ghanaian national team. Elche, Rayo Vallecano, Rayo OKC, Irtysh and Eskilstuna complete their logbook.

In the Indian Super League, Gerard Nus will face a major challenge: taking NorthEast United in the play-offs for the title. The Guwahati club only struggled to win the championship in 2019, when they came fourth but were beaten down by Bengaluru in the semi-finals. “We were really impressed with Gerard's vision. He has trained all over the world and is known for developing talents and playing attractive football.”Proya Runchal, NorthEast executive director, told EastMojo. The Super League, which is scheduled to start in November, will be played entirely in a single venue: Goa.

Spain conquers the benches of the ISL

The arrival of Gerard Nus to NorthEast United only demonstrates the taste for Spanish football in India. Of the 10 benches in the Indian Super League, six are already occupied by Spanish coaches: Carles Cuadrat (Bengaluru), Antonio López Habas (ATK Mohun Bagan), Albert Roca (Hyderabad), Kibu Vicuña (Kerala Blasters), Juan Ferrando (FC Goa) and Gerard Nus (NorthEast United). In the coming weeks, in addition, the arrival of Sergio Lobera to Mumbai City will be made official. Only Jamshedpur (Owen Coyle), Odisha (Stuart Baxler) and Chennaiyin, who have yet to confirm their new manager, escape this rule.
