Postponed to 2023 the Dubai Wheelchair Basketball World Cup due to its coincidence with the Qatar World Cup

MADRID, 10 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) confirmed this Friday the suspension of the World Cup that was to be held in Dubai between November 16 and 27 of this year, with the presence of the Spanish women’s team, in June 2023 due to the coincidence of dates with the Soccer World Cup that takes place in Qatar.

According to the IWBF, this decision “was made after receiving instructions from the Government of Dubai and the Dubai Sports Council” about the non-possibility of holding the event “on the originally scheduled dates due to the conflict with the FIFA World Cup that is taking place at the same time in neighboring Qatar”.

The Dubai authorities base their decision on the issue of “security, health concerns and capacity in Dubai at this time due to the extraordinary conditions” that the celebration of the World Cup entails.

“After extensive meetings and evaluation of all viable solutions, the Executive Committee opted for what it considered to provide the best solution for athletes and teams and safeguard the quality of the World Championships,” the federation said.
