Political fight for Djokovic

The collateral effects of the ‘Djokovic Case’ are still being felt at a political level in Spain. This Tuesday the matter became a little more inflamed after on Monday the mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez Almeida, was in favor of the Serbian tennis player playing the Mutua Madrid Open (from April 26 to May 8).

“We cannot forget that Djokovic is number one in the world and a great advertising claim for the tournament,” said Almeida, who this Tuesday transferred the decision to allow Nole to enter the country or not to the central government. “It is a decision that corresponds to the Government of the nation, which is the one who decides the conditions of entry and the requirements for access to Spain,” he said in statements collected by hour 14 of the BE.

The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, also spoke on the subject this Tuesday at an event at the Hospital del Henares. “I believe that each country sets its standards and they must be met. Each country is sovereign to establish them, as well as each administration,” he said.

Precisely the executive chaired by Pedro Sánchez spoke through his spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, who stated that “what Mr. Djokovic has to do is get vaccinated.” “It would be the right thing to do. They know what Spain’s success strategy has been, which is vaccination. Vaccination without obligation,” he added.

The controversy has spread outside of Madrid and has reached Aragon, where the councilor of Zaragoza for Zaragoza in Common, Alberto Cubero, referred to Almeida with an unfortunate expression: “Mr. Almeida is now going to bring us Djokovic. He is going to propose Djokovic as his favorite son, with the occurrences that they copy, the carap was going to say…, sorry, Mr. Almeida.” The Madrid rector responded that “in politics not everything is fair” and criticized Cubero’s lack of “courage”.

Be that as it may, Djokovic’s entry into Spain to play a tournament would be covered by an exemption for participants in high-level sports events accepted when presenting the vaccination certificate at national borders. In fact, the Serbian already participated in the Davis Finals in December, which had Madrid among its venues.
