WARSAW (POLAND), 16 Aug. (dpa/EP) –
Poland plans to submit a bid to host the 2040 or 2044 Summer Olympics, which it has been “working on for many months,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.
“We have actually been working for many months to make this dream of hosting the Olympic Games in Poland a reality,” Tusk said on social media, where he made it clear that he sees it realistic to talk about a bid to host the Summer Games in 2040 or 2044.
The host city is usually chosen seven years before the event and the selection process includes two phases spanning two years. Germany is also aiming to bid for the 2040 Olympics, while the 2036 Games could be a possibility.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser signed the basic agreement with the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) and the federal states and cities interested in bidding for the Summer Games in Paris at the beginning of August.
Germany hosted the 1936 Olympics in Berlin during the Nazi era and the 1972 Olympics in Munich, as well as the 1936 Winter Olympics in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Several subsequent bids have failed, with attempts by Munich for the 2022 Winter Games and Hamburg for 2024 being stopped by referendums.
