Pittsburgh Pirates News: Endy Rodriguez Undergoes Elbow Surgery – UPDATE – Will Miss All of 2024

Endy Rodriguez has surgery on his elbow and will now miss all of 2024, according to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Endy Rodriguez, a catcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, is said to have had surgery on his arm. Dejan Kovacevic and and Alex Stumpf of DK Pittsburgh Sports say this is true.

There isn’t much else to say about the surgery, how long the will be out, or whether this will affect his ability to go to spring training right now.

Rodriguez’s first few games in Major League Baseball did not go well. His triple-slash was.220/.248/.328, and his wOBA was.271.

His wRC+ was 65. Remember that this was from a 204-plate look sample size, which is not very big. But there were some good things.

The first point is that his walk rate of 8.3% was pretty good. Rodriguez’s exit speed of 89.1 MPH was also faster than normal. The switch-hitter’s average at bat on balls in play was only.281.

Even though the sample size is small, his overall batting average in the minor leagues is.335, which suggests he might be having some bad luck.

Along with Henry Davis, Rodríguez represented one of the two best catching talents to come to Pittsburgh in 2023.

But he played good defense and was a leader behind the dish. His stats also show that he was a good manager. He seemed to give his pitchers a nice pep talk every time he saw them on the hill.

Rodriguez saved three runs on defense and scored two more. He did this in 410 innings. His average throw speed of 84.6 mph was the 24th best in baseball among the 81 qualified catchers. He additionally had the 11th best poptime in baseball.

It makes a lot more sense for the Pirates to sign Ali Sanchez to a Major League deal now that they know they won’t have many other catchers to choose from.

It also makes more sense now what the team said at the MLB Winter Meetings regarding Henry Davis going back to catcher.

No matter what, I and a lot of other Pirate fans hope this is just a small process. Not much is known about Endy’s health right now other than the fact that he has had or will have arm surgery.

It’s clear that this is bad news for the Pirates, and let’s hope he gets better quickly, no matter how long that takes.

It’s too bad to hear that a young player who could be an important addition for the team in 2024 and beyond might not be able to play next year.

Although Rodríguez was better at defense, Davis played right field when Austin Hedges was moved at the deadline. Rodríguez then took most of the playing time at catcher whereas Davis played right field.

The Pirates signed Ali Sánchez onto a Major League deal on December 1. With Rodríguez and Jason Delay already on the team, it seemed like there was a bit of a logjam.

Then, on December 4, things got even less clear when Ben Cherington, the general manager, said Davis would play catcher in spring training.

What the team knew about Rodríguez’s injury, though, meant that it was never going to be a four-catcher situation.

MLB Pipeline says Rodríguez came into the Major Leagues as the Pirates’ No. 3 prospect and a Top 100 talent.

His scoring got worse as the season went on. In his first big league game, he ended up with an.612 OPS, but he is only 23 years old and has only played 57 games in the MLB.

Before the bad accident, he was in a position to make changes and come back stronger in 2024.

You can think of Sánchez as a backup player since he hasn’t played in the Major Leagues since 2021.

Since Delay has already played 125 games behind the plate for Pittsburgh, he is likely to be the favorite to be the starting catcher.

However, if Davis comes into camp much better at receiving, the former No. 1 overall pick could finally be on a way to proving that he is a good big league catcher, which is what the team has always wanted.
