Penalties color Sergio’s debut at El Molinón-Quini

Sergio and Cádiz ask for one more round. The yellow ones they have defeated Sporting in the penalty shootout after the 0-0 with which they reached the end of the match. Arzamendia scored the decisive goal and before David Gil put his men ahead by stopping the first. Huge merit to Sporting who played one on one against another Primera, but failed in the penalty lottery against a rival who hit the four he threw.

Sergio’s first eleven was plagued by those who theoretically will be the least common, it is because of that it was difficult to glimpse changes with respect to the soccer that its predecessor proposed. The truth is that it was difficult for the yellows to enter the game. The leader was Sporting that has a great face when it plays in the Cup. Gallego’s men were eager for the first goal and at the stroke of 20′ they enjoyed a triple chance to take the lead. If it wasn’t for David Gil, the result would have changed, especially in Pedro Díaz’s shot in which he had to work hard to put his hand down.

Cádiz recovered from the scare, correcting in defense and coming out with a little more ease on the attack with quick transitions. Álvaro Jiménez, a former Sporting player, had the first for the yellows, but his shot went wide. During the last 15 minutes of the first half the game calmed down somewhat. Gallego’s claimed two penalties in two consecutive plays to Djuka, by Haroyan’s stomp; and Nacho Méndez, due to a kick from Álvaro Jiménez in the clearance. For Ortiz Arias, from the field and Estrada Fernández, from the VAR, there was nothing punishable.

The second part started with little rhythm and it seemed more like a trench battle than a football game. Cádiz definitively renounced control of the ball, while Sporting tried to braid, although with more difficulties than in the first half. The yellows grew when Gallego’s began to doubt. Merit to Sergio’s who advanced lines and suffocated the local ball out. Despite the effort, the improvement did not materialize at times and Sporting once again believed in their options. A counter led by Puma Rodríguez (one of the best in the match) ended in a shot by Campuzano (who jumped onto the pitch after two months injured), again saved by David Gil and a very attentive Chust.

The occasion emboldened Gallego’s men who returned to besiege David Gil’s goal. The yellow goalkeeper put on his superhero cape to fly in a long shot by Guille Rosas. Despite the fact that the arrivals were red-and-white, Cádiz had the last one (as in Fuenlabrada), but this time Sobrino missed his header against an already defeated Mariño. The extension allowed us to see two tired teams physically that they waited for the opponent’s mistake to do damage. Everything was doomed to penalties that began before time, when Gallego decided to change Mariño for Joel Jiménez for the shootout. Apparently it was not decisive. Too much pressure for the youth squad who did not stop any. Cádiz scored each and every one of the penalties they launched and they are already waiting for a rival in the quarterfinals. Happy debut for Sergio.

Sergio González: “This round pass has to strengthen us”

Sergio Gonzalez He appeared in his first post-match press conference as coach of Cádiz. His team got the pass to the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey in the penalty shootout. The match was not easy for the yellows, who saw how it was impossible for them to generate attacks against the Sporting Gijon. However, the cadistas managed to pass and now, the coach hopes that this will serve as a morale boost to face the league games. Of course, he acknowledged that there is still much to improve.

match evaluation. “Sporting is a very good team. They have been playing in a certain way for a long time, they have a well-established philosophy and it shows a lot. It is a team that improves its performance at home. Sporting beat Villarreal in the previous round, let’s not forget that There have been minutes with situations followed by Sporting that has had good performances from David Gil, we also had chances, like Sobrino’s in the last minute”.

Now it’s time to improve. “We are very happy with the attitude of the footballers. We have only been with them for a few days, we are starting a new route. We still need to automate. This illusion and this round pass has to reinforce us in order to continue growing and fight for victory on Tuesday”.
