Pegula and Jabeur sign a first final 1,000 in Madrid

MADRID, 6 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The American tennis player Jessica Pegula and the Tunisian Ons Jabeur will play the final of the Mutua Madrid Open on Saturday, a category 1,000 tournament for the WTA, after overcoming the semifinals against the Swiss Jil Teichmann (6-3, 6-4) and the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (6-2, 6-3).

Pegula will play her fourth WTA final and the most important so far at the Caja Mágica, after a solid performance in the semis, which closed on Thursday in Madrid at 1:00 at night. The American, very regular the last two years, took another step in the Manolo Santana, the one that resisted her in Miami.

Teichmann reached the semifinals without giving up a set, but Pegula scored the first with two ‘breaks’. He always sent the jacket and in the second set he also started ahead breaking the first game. The Swiss found an answer but a forceful Pegula reasserted herself again to reach the final.

For several hours, Jabeur had already been waiting for his first final in this 1,000 category. The Tunisian put the 6-2 in direct duels against an Alexandrova that has stopped having the measure taken. Champion in Birmingham last year, Jabeur will be in contention for a second title thanks to an almost perfect semi-final.

The African player, number 10 in the world, hardly gave her a chance with her serve, with a 9-23 also significant in unforced errors. After a solid first set, two double faults from her rival gave Jabeur the decisive break in the second set.
