Pedro Martínez advances and Muguruza already has a rival

This Tuesday’s day at the Sydney Tennis Classic does not leave good news for Spanish tennis except for triumph of Pedro Martínez, which does continue forward in the Australian tournament.

The Valencian was able to with a difficult rival like the Australian Alexei Popyrin, whom he defeated by a double 6-4. Martínez defended himself well against the Australian, who managed to break his serve the three times he had the opportunity and cemented the victory with his good service percentages. Now Martínez will seek a place in the quarterfinals against an even more difficult opponent: Britain’s Daniel Evans, third seed for the title.

Before the victory of Pedro Martínez, Albert Ramos announced his withdrawal from the tournament before facing Argentine Federico Delbonis, that finally faced the American Dennis Kudla, who gave the surprise as a ‘lucky loser’ by winning 6-3 and 6-1.

The other bad news of the day was the defeat of Alejandro Davidovich, who could not defeat the Serbian Dusan Lajovic after falling 7-6 (5) and 6-4. Despite the aggressiveness of the Spanish Davidovich he only managed to make two of the nine break balls he had, a fact that, in the end, supposed him to give up the match in the second set after standing up in the first set in the tie-break.

In the men’s box he is also still alive Andy Murray, who returned to win a match on Australian soil three years later after beating Norwegian Viktor Durasovic 6-3 and 6-1. In the second round Murray will have a rather demanding test as he will face the Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, second seeded.

Alexandrova will be Muguruza’s rival

In the female box, The Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova will be Garbiñe Muguruza’s rival in the first match of the Spanish in this year 2022 after winning the Japanese Ena Shibahara by a double 6-4.

In the rest of the matches of the day, the victories of the Olympic champion Belinda Bencic stand out (6-3 and 6-2 to Beatriz Haddad Maia), by Ajla Tomljanovic (6-2 and 6-3 against Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova), by Elise Mertens (6-2 and 7-6 (5) against Fiona Ferro) and Caroline Garcia against Jessica Pegula (6-4 and 7-6 (3). Also noteworthy is the tough defeat of the US Open champion Emma Raducanu, who fell with a crash to the Kazakh Elena Rybakina 6-0 and 6-1 .
