Pedro León: “As soon as I spoke with Oltra I did not hesitate to come”

Pedro León (Mula, 1986) arrived at Fuenlabrada last market becoming the 'bombshell' of the summer in Segunda. Now, the midfielder leads his team based on goals, top scorer with three goals, towards the goal, salvation, or the longed-for dream, the playoff.

The Fernando Torres are increasingly popular figures in Spanish football. Reflection that this 'new' club is becoming better known. But if there is one that is eclipsing all of them, it is Pedro León. The Murcian attends AS to talk about Fuenla, a signing that surprised everyone and his past at Real Madrid.

How are you?

I'm fine. It is true that things did not turn out as we would like at La Rosaleda, but I see the team in a good moment, with things clear and wanting to take a step forward.

Here you are the king right now.

(Laughs) More than the king, I just try to do my job well, nothing more. And with this club it is very simple. It sounds like a cliché, but this template is a family that is together.

Few people explained their signing for Fuenlabrada, how was it forged?

“I wanted to compete every weekend, and that is what this club gives me”

Pedro Leon

I wanted to go back to Madrid because of a family decision. When the team contacted me, two hours later there was a call with the coach. As soon as I spoke with Oltra, I did not hesitate to come. There was hardly any negotiation. I wanted to compete every weekend, and that is what this club gives me.

Isn't it a step back?

Obviously going down from First, which was where he wanted to play at the beginning of the market, to Second is a step back. However, the summer went by and the negotiations with First-class teams did not prosper, so I told my representative that if I ‘went down’ to the silver category, it would be to play in Madrid. That's when Fuenlabrada arrived, and up to this moment and those to come.

And the 'runrún' that occurred with your injuries, did it make you feel ignored?

It's true that it shocked me, but that's how football is. I had a very bad time of injuries, but it was two years ago. Not last season. The 2020-21 I was 100%, but the Eibar coach (Mendilibar) did not count on me.

You have been in a multitude of teams, but your time at Real Madrid is the most mediatic, what aftertaste do you have from that time?

I signed for Real Madrid when I was only 23 years old and with a lot of enthusiasm. That summer I had many offers from important Spanish and foreign clubs, but I opted for the white club. It was normal. Now, with all the time that has passed, I keep what I learned from that time because positive things can be derived from everything, the good and especially the bad.

Those seasons, Madrid did not stop signing top-level international players, was it more difficult to succeed being Pedro León?

I am a firm defender that 'who is better, and trains harder, plays'. This is what I believe in.

Returning to Fuenlabrada, what has surprised you the most about the club?

“I don't know if we will go down, we will make the playoffs or what, but this team is going to fight every day as if it were the last”

Pedro Leon

The seriousness and the desire to grow that they have. It cannot be denied that Fuenlabrada is a humble and family club, but their ambition is impressive. In addition, the union that exists between young people and veterans I have rarely seen.

Speaking of veterans, with Cristóbal you see a huge tune.

I did not know him and he never ceases to amaze me. He is a serious, humble and hard-working person. As a player I will only tell you that the other day a First Class coach was very surprised to see that 'Cris' did not have a longer career in the top flight with his intelligence and technique. I don't believe it either, to tell the truth.

Could it be that this football of innate talent is being lost?

I do not know. Football evolves and it must be assumed as something normal. Now it is much more physical, we cannot deny it, but it is still football. Just as nice and a pleasure to play.

You are the leader of a team that aims not to fall to First RFEF, how do you handle the pressure?

Illusion is what we breathe here, despite the fact that the last result has not been the desired one. When you see the desire to work that there is, you can only hit that. I don't know if we will go down, play the playoffs or what, but I am clear that this group is going to fight every day as if it were the last.

You are served by fighting in this beginning of the competition.

And it's no problem, I'm more than used to it. Think about it, I just came from being with Mendi. That was doing a ‘soccer mili’.
