‘Pecco’ Bagnaia dominates again in Spielberg and consolidates his leadership of MotoGP

Jorge Martín saves the furniture after a sanction and Marc Márquez finally ends up in the points

MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian rider Francesco ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia (Ducati) won this Sunday the MotoGP long race at the Austrian Grand Prix, tenth round of the Motorcycle World Championship, and finished his double after winning the sprint race the day before, consolidating his leadership in the general classification ahead of the Spanish Jorge Martín (Ducati).

On Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring, ‘Pecco’ Bagnaia took advantage of his start from pole position and dominated from start to finish, distancing himself in first place and having no opposition to his slipstream. Thanks to a relatively clean start, without the incidents of the Sprint, he got away from the South African Brad Binder (KTM), who finished second and also without scares.

The fight was for the last drawer of the podium, which was awarded to the Italian Marco Bezzecchi (Ducati) with a key overtaking in the early stages of a test played over 28 laps. He benefited from the fact that Jorge Martín suffered a ‘long lap penalty’, for having exceeded the limits of the track and having stepped on green areas on several occasions.

Despite everything, the rider from San Sebastián de los Reyes (Madrid) staged a formidable comeback to finish in seventh place, just behind his compatriots Álex Marquez (Ducati, 5th) and Maverick Viñales (Aprilia, 6th). Not surprisingly, the man from Figueres had been ceded positions during the start, confirming an irregular weekend.

The one who did improve was the also Catalan Marc Márquez (Repsol Honda), discreet in the Saturday Sprint but more in tune on Sunday. He finished twelfth, within the distribution of points; With this, he appeased the spirits derived from certain rumors that place him in another team for the next season.

His current Repsol Honda teammate, Joan Mir, crashed on lap 13 and was unable to finish the race. The Red Bull Ring was a conducive circuit for the Ducatis and it was clear from the start until Bagnaia crossed the lead line under the checkered flag. Fifth victory of the year for him, equaling his best run from last year.

Bagnaia is more than 60 points ahead of Martín at the top of the MotoGP standings, displaying almost every weekend a power that is difficult for other teams to counteract, much less for other motorcycle brands. Binder’s presence with the ‘silver’ of this Grand Prix was the best news for KTM and the rest of the competitors.
