Paula Badosa gets into the round of 16 in Charleston

Defeat Canadian Leylah Fernandez 7-5, 7-6(6)

MADRID, 5 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa qualified this Wednesday for the round of 16 of the Charleston (United States) tournament, in the WTA 500 category, thanks to her 7-5, 7-6(6) victory over the Canadian player Leylah Fernandez.

Badosa’s good start on the clay court tour was endorsed with another favorable score at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Daniel Island (South Carolina), beating Fernandez after a duel that lasted 1 hour and 52 minutes.

The Spaniard, seeded number 12 in the tournament, came back from 1-4 in the first set as soon as she improved her percentage of points won to the rest. Leading 6-5, she tied the opening set on her second chance to do so and broke the opponent’s serve right after.

That 2-0 scoreline seemed to put the game on track for Badosa, who nevertheless gave up a service turn in the eighth game. Fernandez then pressed until he forced sudden death, where both tennis players hesitated with his services.

The Canadian came to have a set ball in her favor at 5-6, but Badosa reacted with mettle to save her and then win the tie-break on the fast track (8-6), based on an error by Fernandez crashing the decisive ball against the net.
