Paula Badosa approaches her best version in Charleston

MADRID, 6 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa surpassed her third match in three days in the tournament in Charleston (United States), in the WTA 500 category and which is played on clay, by beating (6-1, 6-3) this Thursday the Russian Diana Shnaider to access the quarterfinals.

Badosa, who reached the semifinals in 2021 at the South Carolina event, swept her rival in the first set and then held off the Russian’s improvement to maintain the lead and claim victory on the fast track. For a place in the semifinals, the former number two in the world, the only Spanish in contention, will face the Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu or the American Jessica Pegula.

The Catalan, seeded number 12 in the tournament, entered forcefully with a 4-0 and an intractable game both with her forehand and on serve. Shnaider was hopeless at that 6-1 but in the second set she improved her tennis and evened the exchange.

Badosa then had to save a compromised fifth game but ended up achieving a decisive ‘break’ in the eighth. Thus, in just over an hour, the Catalan advanced to the quarterfinals, cementing her best week of the season since the semifinals she made in Adelaide (Australia) at the beginning of January.
