Patxi Izco, president of Osasuna between 2002 and 2012, dies

MADRID, 21 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The businessman Francisco José ‘Patxi’ Izco, president of CA Osasuna between 2002 and 2012, has died at the age of 77, the Navarrese club confirmed this Friday.

“Osasuna regrets the death of Patxi Izco, president of the club between 2002 and 2012. Rest in peace. Goian bego,” said the rojilla entity on its official account on the social network Twitter.

In 2002, he prevailed in the elections for the presidency of Osasuna, succeeding Javier Miranda Martínez, with 76% of the votes, going hand in hand with the Mexican coach Javier Aguirre. With Izco in charge, the team was runner-up in the Copa del Rey in 2005 and a year later finished fourth in LaLiga Santander, which gave them the right to play in the Champions League the following year.

He ran for re-election in 2006, winning without opposition and with ‘Cuco’ Ziganda as the new coach after ‘Vasco’ left for Atlético Madrid, and the team reached the semifinals of the UEFA Cup. In 2010 he won the elections again and in 2012 he resigned from the presidency.

In 2015 he was arrested for alleged diversion of capital during his tenure as head of the club, and in 2021 he was sentenced to 23 months and 15 days in prison for a continued crime of misappropriation and false accounting and compensation of 1,154,762.84 euros for the unjustified outflows of money from the coffers of the Navarrese club.
