Patriots cut veteran running back after error on special teams

Following the Patriots’ 21-18 triumph over the Pittsburgh Steelers late Thursday night, this action has been taken.

In the game, Montgomery took charge of a blocked punt throughout the fourth quarter that allowed the Steelers to retake the lead and win the touchdown.

This roster choice has to be based on that play, especially considering the Patriots’ poor performance on special teams.

The team also declared the signing of Christian Elliss, a former linebacker and special team member for the Philadelphia Eagles, along with the waiver of Montgomery.

Montgomery is a gifted man who is thirty years old. In New England, he has worked with receivers, special teams, and running backs.

But for a Patriots club beset by ailments and plenty of opportunity, he found it difficult to make an impression at any position.

Last month, JaMycal Hasty was claimed by New England off waivers from Jacksonville, and Reiss hinted that the younger player posed a challenge to Montgomery’s status on the squad.

Montgomery, a former third-round pick, will be placed on waivers after he was a part of the Pats offensive unit which allowed a blocked kick in the team’s surprise victory over the Steelers. It won’t be possible to complete a Montgomery claim until Monday.

After Montgomery had bounced around the league, the Pats signed him on a two-year, $3.6 million contract in 2022, returning the receiving expert to town.

Although he is most recognized for his tenure with the Movers, the 30-year-old veteran additionally played for the Ravens, Jets, the Saints after selecting 94th overall in the 2015 draft.

Although Montgomery started 11 games within the backfield for Green Bay from 2016–17, his main role has been as an offensive and return game weapon off the bench. This season, the former Stanford student was the Pats’ main kick returner.

Montgomery played just one game in 2022 due to an injury, but the organization kept him around in case he cleared waivers and signed him back for the practice squad.

However, Montgomery’s offensive output since leaving the Patriots has been meager (13 touches, 62 yards).

During the 2016 season, Montgomery, who switched from receiver to a running back early throughout his Packers career, amassed 805 scrimmage yards while serving as Green Bay’s starter running back in part.

After being cut by the Pack in the 2018 season, Montgomery accepted three one-year contracts before agreeing to a two-year contract with the Pats. Montgomery also spent time in Baltimore.

Montgomery may soon be looking for a new team, even though he has performed well enough to play for nine seasons a a backup running back.

It seems like this one has been coming for a while. And the Patriots were compelled to act on Thursday night due to an error.

Running fullback Ty Montgomery was dismissed by the organization on Friday, clearing a spot off the roster for Christian Elliss, a newly acquired linebacker.

Despite playing in each of the thirteen matches this season, Montgomery’s stats are quite low—he has only three carries for nine running yards and five grabs on 12 targets or 40 passing yards.

Though he missed their crucial tackle, he also made a significant contribution to special teams, helping the Steelers block a punt during Thursday’s game. On the next punt, Kyle Dugger replaced Montgomery, who had been benched for the error.

The Steelers took advantage of the short field position that the block gave them by scoring a touchdown and successfully converting a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to three points.
