Overmars, under the magnifying glass for a scam of 111 million euros

Marc Overmars is in the spotlight in the Netherlands. The sports director of Ajax is allegedly an advisor to the cryptocurrency Xpose Protocol, which although it experienced a ‘boom’ when it appeared in the spring of 2021, shortly after it collapsed and has left thousands of young Dutchmen in the lurch, according to Voetbalzone. A premeditated mega-scam of 125 million dollars (111 million euros), according to experts.

This has a lot to do with the clever marketing campaign behind it all: influencers on major social media channels are encouraged to buy Xpose, and people who have bought are encouraged to come back to recruit new buyers. Thus, mountains of gold are promised as guaranteed passive income and the value of the currency explodes in a few days at the end of May.

On May 25, 2021, Overmars also decides to tie his name to Xpose. Known for his excellent business instincts, he officially introduces himself on the coin’s website as an ‘advisory board member’. It is not explained in more detail what exactly that role entails, but everything seems to have a clear attraction effect on the part of Xpose when signing Overmars: the price triples in just 48 hours.

But on May 28, 2021, just three days after Overmars arrived, the bomb exploded. The price of Xpose plummets in no time and almost 20,000 people lost almost all of their money in one fell swoop. Ajax limited itself to saying then about Overmars that “the information we have is that it is an advisory role for which he does not receive any compensation. We have nothing more to report.”

And with Overmarse not commenting on the matter, host Tim Hofman of the YouTube show BOOS is demanding that Ajax’s director of football take responsibility. “Let us know, otherwise we’ll let you know,” Hofman said on his Instagram account.
