Ourense will be from this Friday to Sunday the nerve center of national athletics with the dispute of the 60th edition of the Spanish Indoor Track Championship, now called 'Short Track', and with the presence of figures such as Adel Mechaal, Ana Peleteiro, Marta García , Mario García Romo, Mariano García, Esther Guerrero, Marta Pérez, Asier Martínez or Jordan Díaz.
The Expourense tartan will feature 19 of the 26 athletes who must defend their thrones indoors and 63 of the 78 medalists from the last edition in Madrid, in addition to the presence of almost all the leaders of the year and a total of eleven Spanish record holders.
As usual, much of the attention will be focused on the middle-distance and long-distance events, such as the 800 meters where there will be eight athletes who have already been national champions, four female (Lorea Ibarzabal, Lorena Martín, Natalia Romero and Zoya Naumov) and four men (Sául Ordóñez, Álvaro de Arriba, Pablo Sánchez-Valladares and Mariano García).
Ibarzabal will be in charge of defending the women's title, while Ordóñez will do so among the men, in a high-level race due to the presence of García, current world champion, Adrián Ben, current European champion, and Mohamed Attaoui, the Spanish leader of the year (1:45.49).
In the 1,500, also a high level with the presumed duel between Adel Mechaal, who aspires to his fourth national gold, and Mario García Romo in search of the throne left vacant by Ignacio Fontes, and with Esther Guerrero and Marta Pérez willing to rival his excellent condition currently and his dominance in this test since 2018.
Finally, in the 3,000, Mechaal will try to compete for a double that she already achieved in the Galician city in 2022 and Marta García will be the favorite in the female category after appearing in Ourense as the brand new record holder in Spain (8:38.34).
In addition, we will also have to pay attention to the 400 meters, with Óscar Husillos and Eva Santidrián defending their 2022 crowns against a large list of candidates, while in the 200 Daniel Rodríguez will try to maintain his love affair with Ourense, where he was champion in 2020 and 2022, and in the 60 m we will have to pay attention to the attractive fight between Maribel Pérez and Jaël-Sakura Bestué and in the 60 meter hurdles, which will face Quique Llopis and Asier Martínez.
As for the competitions, the return in the triple jump of Ana Peleteiro stands out above all, who will compete in her homeland and after leaving good feelings at the beginning of the season. In the men's competition there will be the Spanish record holder Jordan Díaz. Fátima Diamé and Eusebio Cáceres, who aspires to her fourteenth medal, will be the favorites in length and Belén Toimil and Carlos Tobalina, in weight.
