Turkish rider Deniz Öncü (KTM) has won pole position for the Moto3 race of the Portuguese Grand Prix, the fifth round of the Motorcycle World Championship, in which he will start ahead of Indonesian Mario Aji (Honda) and Frenchman Lorenzo Fellon (Honda ), while Carlos Tatay (CFMoto) will start fourth and will be the most advanced Spanish rider on the grid.
In a complicated Q2, in which the wet asphalt caused crashes like those of Sergio García Dols (GasGas) – twice -, second in the championship and ‘poleman’ at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve in 2021, and Dani Holgado (KTM) , the pilots launched with difficulties for the privileged position.
In a few final laps with changes in the lead, Öncü, who came from Q1, set a 2:03.955 that was unbeatable by his competitors, becoming the fifth different driver on pole this season in the small displacement.
Thanks to the second first position of his life, he will start the test in Portuguese lands ahead of Aji and Fellon. Meanwhile, Tatay will lead a second row in which he will be accompanied, despite his crash when he was competing for pole, Sergio García Dols, sixth.
In addition, Izan Guevara (GasGas) will start the event ninth, Holgado will do so thirteenth and Jaume Masià (KTM) fifteenth. Among those who did not go through to Q2, Xavi Artigas (CFMoto) will start nineteenth, David Salvador (Husqvarna) twenty-first, Iván Ortolá (KTM) twenty-third, and Gerard Riu Male (KTM), Ana Carrasco (KTM) and David Alonso ( Kalex) will start from the bottom of the grid.
