Obi Mikel, on Iniestazo: “Bottles blew up in the dressing room and tables were broken”

The unforgettable Chelsea-Barcelona on May 6, 2009 (1-1, in the first leg 0-0 at the Camp Nou), which ended with Andrés Iniesta's goal in extremis that gave the Barcelona fans a pass to the final of the Champions of Rome (won against Manchester United), left a bitter aftertaste in the locker room of the 'blues', in which “chaos” was unleashed, as recalled by former London midfielder John Obi Mikel.

In an interview with the Athletic portal, the Nigerian, who at 33 years old plays for Stoke, in the English Second Division, recalls that anger towards referee Tom Henning Ovrebo, whom Chelsea accused of having ignored four penalties, caused “the chaos in the tunnel and the changing rooms afterwards”.

“Bottles and other things were flying everywhere. Tables were smashed. Everyone was yelling and screaming,” recalls Obi Mikel, who insists that for that successful Chelsea losing “was not at all acceptable.”

Especially furious was the reaction of the star of that team, Didier Drogba, who “lost his roles on the field and continued from there.”

The Norwegian referee received death threats from Chelsea supporters for years for his decisions, but Iniestazo allowed Barça to tie the game and advance to the final in Rome to win the title in the year of the Sextete.
