Number one Scheffler wins his second Masters

MADRID, 15 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The American golfer Scottie Scheffler won his second Augusta Masters this Sunday, the first ‘major’ of the season, by staying at the top for almost all four days, acting as favorite and number one in the world.

Scheffler put on his second green jacket after the one he won in 2022 in an outcome that he kept under control like the rest of the week. The Texan won with a final round of -4, -11 in total, with four shots ahead of the Swede Ludvig Aberg, a debutant at Augusta National who ended up being his biggest rival.

The Spanish Jon Rahm placed the jacket on the American, giving up his reign without opposition. The one from Barrika, who this season became part of the Saudi LIV Golf, did not go below par on any day and finished this Sunday with 76 strokes, +9 in total, tied with José María Olazabal, the other Spaniard in contention after Sergio García will not make the cut on Friday.

At 27 years old and with nine titles, Scheffler was once again invincible. The American did well in almost all the pools, second on Thursday and first from Friday until the end. The Texan attacked without regard, four ‘birdies’ in the final stretch on Sunday, while his rivals fell into the traps of Augusta, destined to win again in the Masters and reaffirm his dominance on the American circuit the last two years.

Only the birth of his first child, with his wife waiting to give birth in Dallas, would have gotten him out of the green jacket, but not the wind of the first two days or the spotlight on his performance. At that rate, no one could stand up to a player who had come close to three consecutive victories in the PGA in March. Aberg, a European surprise in the last Ryder Cup, fell short (-7).

The American Collin Morikawa, who started second by one stroke, was not good from the tee and sank with two double-bogeys on holes 9 and 11 (-4). Max Homa also stayed away (-4) or a Bryson DeChambeau who deflated after his ordeal on Thursday. The great comeback of Englishman Tommy Fleetwood also ended with -4.

Augusta did not miss a detail either of Tiger Woods who finished last of the 60 players who made the cut. A result far from the legend of the champion of 15 ‘greats’ but, after his serious traffic accident in 2021, without hardly competing in this time, the ‘Tigre’ showed that he is still hungry and dedicated to seeking new exploits, as he already did. It was his last Masters in 2019.
