Nick Kyrgios withdraws from Australian Open

MADRID, 16 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn this Monday from the Australian Open, the first ‘Grand Slam’ of the season, due to a knee injury.

“It’s a bad time. But that’s life, injuries are part of the sport. I guess I can be inspired by someone like Thanasi -Kokkinakis-, who has had a lot of injuries and has recovered. I have no doubt that I will return to to have all my strength and I will play the tennis that I was playing before this tournament,” he said.

Kyrgios was returning to Melbourne after winning the doubles title last year with his friend Thanasi Kokkinakis. This Tuesday he was going to debut in the individual draw against the Russian Roman Safiullin, and his place will be occupied by the ‘lucky loser’ Denis Kudla.

Now, the Australian, who suffers a small tear in the lateral meniscus, will have to undergo an arthroscopy. “I’m devastated, it’s my home tournament and I have great memories here. Last year I won the doubles title and played probably the best tennis of my life. Coming into this tournament as one of the favorites is brutal. All I can do Now it’s looking forward, doing what I have to do and coming back,” he said.
