Ryan Fitzpatrick Goes On IR
The Washington Football Team is placing starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick on injured reserve, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Fitzpatrick, who signed a one-year deal in free agency, suffered a hip subluxation in Sunday’s 20-16 home loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Rapoport added that there’s “no indication” right now that Fitzpatrick’s injury is season-ending.
Fitzpatrick completed three of six pass attempts for 13 yards. He took one sack in the loss.
Heinicke turned heads in January when he nearly led Washington to a giant upset over the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in last season’s NFC Wild Card Round.
He picked up where he left off against the Chargers, completing 11 of 15 pass attempts for 122 yards and a touchdown. He also had 17 rushing yards.
Ron Rivera and company will look to rebound when they host the NFC East rival New York Giants on Thursday Night Football. Washington is listed as a four-point favorite for that game. Football fans can go to NFL weekly odds to see the Week 2 betting lines.
Making his first NFL start, Detroit Lions rookie offensive tackle Penei Sewell had a phenomenal performance against San Francisco 49ers superstar pass rusher Nick Bosa. Sewell’s outing was a bright spot in Detroit’s 41-33 defeat at Ford Field.
Starting left tackle Taylor Decker is on the IR with a finger injury. This prompted Lions head coach Dan Campbell to move Sewell into the LT position, and he had a solid outing against Bosa, who came into Sunday with nine career sacks in just 18 games.
Bosa was impressed with how Sewell handled him, and he offered praise for the No. 7 selection of this year’s draft.
“He’s going to be good,” Bosa said after San Francisco’s win, per Tim Twentyman of the Lions team website. “He’s more comfortable on the left, and I could tell from the tape I saw of him on the right. I told him after the game he’s better on the left.”
Pro Football Focus graded Sewell at 70.8 overall in his NFL debut. He received grades of 65.3 and 71.8 in pass-blocking and run-blocking, respectively.
Against a stout 49ers front seven, the Lions finished with 116 rushing yards. Free agent signing Jamaal Wililams led the way with 54 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

The New Orleans Saints throttled the Green Bay Packers in a showdown featuring the NFC’s top two seeds from last season.
Jameis Winston, making his first start for the Saints, looked brilliant with 14 completion on 20 attempts for 148 yards and a whopping five touchdowns in a 38-3 win.
But Winston’s impressive outing was only half the story. New Orleans’ stingy defense absolutely dominated the Pack, holding the league’s reigning MVP to three points. Rodgers threw two picks and was limited to 15 completions for 133 yards.
Star running back Aaron Jones was held to nine yards on five carries, and top wideout Davante Adams notched just five catches for 56 yards.
Rodgers had a blunt message in the Packers’ humiliating defeat.
“We played badly,” Rodgers said, via ESPN’s Rob Demovsky. “I played badly. Offensively we didn’t execute very well. One game. We’ve got 16 to go.”
Rodgers’ comments came after head coach Matt LaFleur said New Orleans “absolutely embarrassed us”, per Demovsky.
“We probably felt like we were gonna go up and down the field on whoever they had out there and that obviously wasn’t the case today,” Rodgers added. “I give (Saints defensive coordinator) Dennis Allen a lot of credit. I think I’ve always thought he’s a really good defensive mind. They had a good plan. It was to play a lot of two-shell and slow us down with the front. They did a good job of that.
Both of Rodgers’ interceptions came in the third quarter. The first one (by Paulson Adebo) occurred in the red zone that ended a likely scoring drive. The second (by Marcus Williams) set up Winston’s touchdown to Chris Hogan that put New Orleans up by three scores.
Including the postseason, this was the worst loss of Rodgers’ career, Demovsky noted.
The Packers will next host the NFC North rival Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football in Week 2. With a loss, Green Bay would fall to 0-2 for the first time since 2006.
