Nadal leaves the ‘Top 10’ for the first time since 2005 in Alcaraz’s return to number one

MADRID, 20 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz has released his status as number one in the world this Monday after winning the Indian Wells Masters 1,000 this morning, while Rafa Nadal has left the ‘Top 10’ for the first time in almost 18 years.

The 36-year-old Spaniard had not moved from the top ten positions in the men’s ranking since April 25, 2005, after lifting the Conde de Godó trophy -when he rose to seventh place-, and in total he has accumulated 912 weeks in a row in the ‘Top 10’.

His iliopsoas injury already prevented him from defending his Australian Open crown at the beginning of the year, and the 600 points lost in Indian Wells, where he was a finalist last year, have displaced him from the ATP honors. Thus, he drops four places to thirteenth, where he remains with 2,725 points.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz returns to number one, something he had already achieved on September 12, 2022 by winning his first ‘Grand Slam’, the US Open. On January 30, the Serbian Novak Djokovic displaced him from the top of the ATP with his tenth Australian Open.

The 640 points added by the Murcian (7,420) return him to number one, where he leads the Balkan by 260 points (7,160), now number two. The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas remains on the ‘podium’ of the ranking, and the Norwegian Casper Ruud continues fourth.

In addition, Russian Daniil Medvedev moves up one position to fifth, ahead of Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime, who moves up four positions to sixth. Russian Andrey Rublev is seventh, Danish Holger Rune is eighth, Polish Hubert Hurkacz rises two places to ninth and American Taylor Fritz closes the ‘Top 10’ by dropping five places for not defending his title in Indian Wells.

Among the rest of Spaniards, Pablo Carreño from Asturias continues in 17th place, Alejandro Davidovich from Malaga rises three to 25, Roberto Bautista from Castellón falls one to 28, Bernabé Zapata from Valencia improves one to 41, Albert Ramos from Barcelona falls one to 51, Jaume Munar from the Balearic Islands drops eight to 66 and Roberto Carballés from Tenerife drops five to 84.
