This Thursday, Movistar Estudiantes reached an agreement with Spanish coach Nacho Martínez Rey, 60, to lead the women’s first team bench during the 2024/25 and 2025/26 seasons, replacing David Gallego in the position.
“She joins the team immediately and will travel to Ferrol to be in front of the bench,” Estudiantes alluded to the match that the ‘Women in Black’ will play next Saturday (7:00 p.m.), against BAXI, on matchday 11 of the Endesa Women’s League.
“Martínez returns to what was his home for many years. The coach was a coach in the lower categories of the collegiate club and also of the senior women’s team. In addition, he was coordinator of the quarry between 2002 and 2007; and he returned in 2015 assuming the position as technical director of Women’s Basketball, within the 2015-2020 strategic plan that wanted to reinforce the different sports structures of Movistar Estudiantes,” the ‘telephone’ club recalled in a note.
“During those years, women’s basketball in the collegiate club achieved milestones such as returning to the highest category and successes in the training categories with several Madrid championships and medals in the Spanish Championships,” said ‘Estu’ in its press release. .
“In 2018 (and until 2022) he headed to Russia to become Miguel Méndez’s assistant coach at UMMC Ekaterinburg. He is also an assistant coach of the Spanish women’s basketball team,” the same statement noted.
“As for clubs, in January 2024 he took over as coach of Perfumerías Avenida, and managed to qualify among the top eight teams in Europe, and first place in the LF Endesa regular league to secure a place in the Euroleague,” added the note.
