“My grandfather always said that for the king all free”

Nieto of the painter Joan Miró and artist for genetics and passion Joan Punyet Miró prefers to sign his work with his first last name and that is that even in that he is elegant. From his grandfather he has inherited a lot, not only paintings and memories but also personality and hobbies. It’s a dandy That the clothes are made in the tailor and even the custom pajamas. “My grandfather in September was already commissioning linen shirts for the next summer,” he recalls. It combines the colors even with the crystals of their glasses and arrives in Madrid with an exhibition of small paintings and large format ranging between 3,000 and 10,000 euros.

Inside the space the grandson of the great Joan Miró awaits methat Take out the good education but I ask you to relax and use the tuteo that you like so much in Madrid. I see that it carries a sock of each color while showing me its glasses that makes a Mallorcan that cultivates almond trees and transforms the peels into the most unique mounts. We start well and end better.

Can you know how it has ended in this exhibition with your paintings?

It is a transversal experience of rock and rollgastronomy, poetry, music and vital dimensions. I am not a painter of paintings but a creator of experiences because I confess that the art world is very boring. Intellectuals, gallery owners … is more of the same. Let’s see how much I win or lose. I prefer to mix wine, beer, rock and poetry with the canallesque of the night with substances that we should not pronounce because all that makes the bohemia claim its place of failure and loser. Today making an apology of error is something that the algorithm does not allow you. The great mistakes have led to Viagra or the Casar cake, which give millions of euros a year, and it is the ability to make mistakes to claim in the human being.

And a dandy Like you who are not wrong in your image.

That was taught by my grandfather. I used to write to the tailor in December to commission the summer shirts. I have learned to be a dandy With the elegance of my grandfather and that is why everything I carry is made to measure because I also want to help the Spanish tailoring. It costs me a lot of money and hours of choosing threads or tissues but I think that elegance is a value that Spanish has to defend. My grandfather was obsessed with dressing well. When he lived in Paris and spent a lot of hunger he put his pants between the somier and the mattress so that the next day he was ironed. He went to the great hypnosis meetings of André Breton where he hallucinated and those dream worlds were the ones he later embodied in his works.

Your grandfather dies when you are 15 years old. His most shocking memory was when he first entered his painting study.

I was 10 years old in my grandfather’s 85 when I first entered his painting study in Palma de Mallorca and you don’t imagine what that was. That smell of waterfall, gasoline, solvents, all full of splashes of paint of all kinds: oil, acrylic, watercolor, pencils everywhere. It was a color field where you would look. That is why many children love Miró and return to him over the years because it is that painting close to the naked spirit of the child, an automatic and unpredictable intuitive creation. Near the soul, not from the head. That day I changed my life.

How does your work sign?

Punyet because I want everyone to differentiate between Punyet and looked. At first I put the two surnames because the first steps I lean on my grandfather but then I was walking alone.

How have they received him in the art world? Do they recognize him as an artist?

Very bad because they think that I am an exploited and I have it easy to have money and fame for having a grandfather like mine. What I learned is that you have to fight for dreams and freedoms. I spent ten years living outside Spain between the United States, London and Paris and I understood that in Spain we have great as Picasso, Dalí and looked and yet we are throwing stones on our own roof. Through my veins, Miró’s blood runs and you have to give wings to everything and pursue the objectives. Something that is encouraged in other cultures but not so much in the Spanish. That is why I am supporting everyone who lives under the name of someone very prominent and encourages them to continue with that inheritance.

At present he lives in Mallorca and I have ever heard him say that if he looked he lived today he would be independence.

No way. 8,000 companies from Catalonia have gone to Bilbao, Valencia, Madrid, Málaga, Mallorca and intended to return by a decree law. That is fascism and totalitarianism something that my grandfather always repudiated. Today’s Catalonia is against the values of Tarradellas, Suárez, King Juan Carlos or my own grandfather. I lived the wonderful experience of the Olympic Games with Maragall and was a Catalonia open to the world. Today it is closed in a sickly provincialism with messages that hurt Catalans. I can say it because I have freedom and the last name looked that it has allowed me to know another time and be in the generation that a totally different Catalonia wanted.

What do you think of the current situation of King Juan Carlos?

Everything seems very unfair. Juan Carlos rejected Toldos the powers that Franco assigned him because he opted for a parliamentary monarchy granting those powers to the people because he dreamed with a democratic Spain. That generosity is brutal. He left his childhood aside to educate himself next to Franco and organize the transition and create a modern Spain with people who supported him as Suárez or Joan Miró himself. My grandfather always said that for the king and for Spain all free. He made the sun of Spain that became the brand that identified us in the world and that was a Catalan that today would not commune with the values of fanaticism of Catalanism in Catalonia.

But King Juan Carlos today lives in Dubai and has had serious skirts and economic problems.

All in life we make mistakes but it does not seem fair that for a wrong ten percent one is deemed ninety percent of an exemplary life.

Do you identify with any politician?

With myself. I am the President of the Independent Republic of Joan Punyet. I am the government and the judiciary of my house.

What was left in his grandfather inheritance?

I have a collection of forty pictures of my grandfather who are deposited at the foundations of Barcelona and in the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid and I can no longer have anything because once we were stolen at a knife point for a twenty million picture in our house in Mallorca. I don’t want to remember that experience. Then it is true that it could be recovered, it was restored and now it is exposed at the Foundation. At home it is impossible to have something because you play life.

What is your favorite Miró painting?

THE BIRTH OF THE WORLD. He painted it in 1995 and is in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is the prelude to the American abstract expressionism. Pollock, Franz Kline, Kooning, Rothko, Motherwell … Everyone has come from Joan Miró.

Did they get along so badly and Dalí?

Yes. Dalí’s father was a notary in Figueras and asked Miró for help to take care of Salvador Dalí but then betrayed him. His way of being was disastrous. It was a showman Very pesetero, quite the opposite of my grandfather who was altruistic and modest, totally antagonistic to Dalí’s values.

After Madrid what awaits you?

In May I will be in Manila and in July in Mallorca with this exhibition. I have an office in Paris where the committee is from where we denounce all the counterfeiters of my grandfather’s work that I assure you there are many.

Personally, what is your status?

Right now I am in the process of divorce after two decades with my wife. I have a 21 -year -old daughter and a 15 -year -old son and is very hard.
