Muslera will undergo surgery on Tuesday for the fractured tibia and fibula

Uruguayan goalkeeper Fernando Muslera will undergo surgery on Tuesday in Istanbul for a fractured tibia and fibula that he suffered last night during the match against Rizespor, Istanbul football club Galatasaray announced Monday.

“The operation of our player Fernando Muslera will take place tomorrow morning. Today he was diagnosed and preparations were made,” the club said in a statement.

The team announced that during the player's medical examination, the knee was also diagnosed with a rupture “almost entirely of the internal lateral ligament” and a “partial rupture in the anterior cruciate ligament.”

Muslera was injured at the start of the match against Rizespor – which ended 2-0 in favor of the Black Sea team – due to a collision in a divided ball that was also bid by the Ivorian attacker Ismael Diomande.

The Galatasaray goalkeeper, who has been with the club for nine seasons, shared messages of support from other footballers and public figures this morning on his Instagram.

His injury occurred in the first game of Galatasaray after the Turkish league resumed after a break of more than two months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Turkish media point out that Muslera's injury leaves Galatasaray with few options to win the league, although the Istanbul club is in third position, six points behind the leader of the classification, Trabzonspor.
