Murray: “Wimbledon will never be an exhibition”

MADRID, 25 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Scottish tennis player Andy Murray, winner of Wimbledon in 2013 and 2016, stated before the controversy over the withdrawal by the ATP and WTA of the points awarded by the Grand Slam to the participants that the fans “will not care about the ranking” and that ” they will remind whoever wins” Wimbledon, that “it will never be an exhibition”.

“I’d venture to predict that most people watching tennis on Center Court at Wimbledon in a few weeks won’t know or care much how many ranking points a player receives for winning a third-round match,” Andy said. Murray on his Twitter account.

The tennis player was very clear explaining what he thinks about the next edition of the Grand Slam after the decision of the ATP and WTA. “I guarantee you the winner will be remembered. Wimbledon will never be an exhibition. Period,” he assured.

Andy Murray used the example of other sports he likes to explain his reasoning. “I follow golf very closely and I have no idea how many ranking points the winner of the Augusta Masters earns. My friends and I love football and none of us know or care how many ranking points it gives you.” win the World Cup. But I can say exactly who won the World Cup and the Augusta Masters,” he said.

The controversy comes as a result of the decision of the ATP and WTA to strip Wimbledon of the points it distributed in the Grand Slam after the All England Tennis Club denied the participation of Russian and Belarusian tennis players due to the invasion of Ukraine.
