Murray on NextGen: “They're nowhere near Federer, Nadal or Djokovic”

Andy Murray does not believe that the youngest of the circuit are close to the 'Big Three', made up of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, and that if the Serbian had not hit a linesman in New York, the result at the US Open would have been the same as Australia's.

The British tennis player, a finalist two weeks ago in a Challenger in Biella (Italy), competes this week thanks to an invitation at the ATP 250 in Montpellier and in his first press conference, he unraveled his thoughts on what happened in Melbourne.

“It is not the same to show your face in a Grand Slam final than in a quarter-final or a semi-final, when you face someone who has won 17 titles”, said Murray, a three-time Grand Slam winner who lost five finals in Australia.

“It's very intimidating and the younger guys haven't shown they are anywhere near. At the US Open, Thiem did what he had to do to win the tournament, but if Djokovic hadn't hit that linesman, the result would have been the same as in Melbourne, “he added.

In addition, Murray assured that he has tried to isolate himself from the Australian Open, since he could not participate because he tested positive days before taking the flight to Melbourne.

“I've seen very little, because I wanted to have been there and I couldn't”the Scotsman pointed out.

“I stopped following all the tennis players on social media because I really didn't want to see what was happening there.”
