Munar attends his appointment with Carreño in Indian Wells

Debut with victory against Shang Juncheng, 17, the first Chinese player in a Masters 1,000

MADRID, 12 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Jaume Munar overcame (6-3, 6-4) this Friday his debut in Indian Wells, the first Masters 1,000 of the season, against the Chinese Shang Juncheng to advance to the second round, where his compatriot Pablo Carreño awaits him.

Munar did not fail against Juncheng, 17, who became the first Chinese player in history to play a Masters 1,000. The Spaniard held firm to the aggressive and unapologetic game of his rival, with break options for both and Juncheng breaking first.

The Spanish player reacted with authority to clip the Asian’s wings, with four games in a row that gave him command of the first set. Already in the second, the Chinese tennis player, coming from the previous one like the Spanish, gave up his serve from the start but continued to stand.

Munar lost that advantage at times but reacted again immediately and definitively, holding a Juncheng with morale already more touched despite being the youngest player to reach a Masters 1,000 with the previous one since Rafa Nadal did it with 16 years old in 2003 in Hamburg.
