Müller: “We want Lewandowski to stay, but we all know the business”

MUNICH (GERMANY), May 15. (dpa/EP) –

German striker Thomas Müller expressed hope that his teammate Robert Lewandowski will continue at Bayern Munich, as the club prepared to celebrate its tenth consecutive Bundesliga title with its fans on Sunday from the balcony of the Bavarian capital’s City Hall.

“Let’s see what happens. He has a contract until 2023. That means Bayern have the floor. Of course we want him to stay. But, of course, we all know the business…” Müller told Sky TV at the end of the match. last game of the season, in Wolfsburg.

Bayern and Lewandowski himself confirmed on Saturday that the Polish striker will not renew his contract, which expires in 2023.

Müller also said that he hopes the 33-year-old Lewandowski will stay for another year, but he has no illusions either, stating that the striker would continue to deliver even if he had to stay for one more season. “‘Lewy’ is a top-notch professional. When you’re on the pitch as a player, and especially as a striker, you want to perform,” he said.

But although the club insists that it will not be for sale this summer, Lewandowski claimed that it must be taken into account if an offer is presented amid the supposed interest of FC Barcelona.

Lewandowski has been in Munich since 2014 after four seasons at Borussia Dortmund, the greatest rival in German football. In those years he has won every title at club level, including the 2020 treble (League, Cup and Champions League) with Bayern, and 10 Bundesligas in total with both clubs.

A year ago he broke Gerd Müller’s scoring record in a season, with 41 goals, and has been the top scorer in seven seasons, including the last five. He is the second highest scorer in the history of the Bundesliga, with 312 goals, only surpassed by Müller himself, with 375.
