Muguruza: “I feel fresh compared to other editions”

MADRID, 29 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza valued her rest period as a success to recover from various discomforts and arrive in Madrid physically fresher than in previous editions, focused “naturally” on the tour on clay, after a debut with victory this Friday against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.

“I feel fresh compared to other editions. I haven’t played as many games, I took advantage of the time to rest and train, both things are very important and I feel good,” he said at a press conference after his debut at the Mutua Madrid Open .

The Spanish-Venezuelan reappeared after just over a month with the intention of taking advantage of the energy of the public in the Caja Mágica, instead of feeling the pressure of playing at home. “I came without high expectations, without knowing how I was going to feel after not playing for so long. But I came out and I love playing tennis, I caught the energy of the public more this time than other years”, she pointed out.

“In other editions I couldn’t get over my nerves at times, but this year I’m going to take advantage of the public. You always come thinking that it’s the only tournament in Spain, and it’s a lot of pressure to take advantage of the opportunity to shine. But this year I thought the opposite, ‘I’m here, it’s a great tournament, play your best tennis’ and whatever happens, instead of putting pressure on my back,” he added.

In addition, Muguruza again insisted on the importance of his break. “I felt like I needed the break. I was training a lot and my body wasn’t assimilating it. I had a pain here, another there, I had an accumulation of pain. So I told my team that I needed at least 10 days of rest to recover the body “, he claimed.

“The moment I stopped playing, my shoulder started to recover, my leg, my back, everything started to fall into place. This year we have to focus more on the clay, it was a natural feeling. The schedule is very intense I thought that nothing was going to happen if I skipped one or two tournaments if I’m going to come back later and feel better,” he finished.
