Moto3 leader David Alonso wins and leaves Austria stronger

MADRID, 18 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Colombian rider David Alonso (CFMoto) won the Moto3 race at the Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday, the eleventh round of the World Championship, and strengthened his lead in a crazy race in which the pole man and his great rival Iván Ortolá (MT Helmets) had to start from the pit lane and climbed back to ninth position, but far from the podium finished by David Muñoz (BOE) and Daniel Holgado (GasGas).

The big surprise of the Austrian Moto3 race came at the start, when Spaniard Iván Ortolá, second in the championship and starting from first position, had problems with his bike at the end of the warm-up lap and had to go into the pits from the grid.

Ortolá started from the pit lane, last, and was forced to fight back to keep up his momentum in the Championship. On the eighth lap he was sixteenth and finished the race in a creditable ninth place, scoring points that, with what remains ahead, keep him in the fight for the title.

However, leader David Alonso did not waste the opportunity and won his seventh race so far in the World Championship. Always in the leading group and with a good race pace, he waited until the last laps to get to the front of the race and push forward. His pace made several drivers drop off, until he ended up in a small group of five drivers hoping to win.

The Colombian -born in Madrid- did not hesitate and kept at bay the Spaniards David Muñoz, who had a great race, and Daniel Holgado, who both fought until the end and finished second and third, respectively. Outside the podium, but in that same group, were the Spanish ‘rookie’ Ángel Piqueras (Leopard) and the Dutchman Collin Veijer (Husqvarna).

After this meeting at the Red Bull Ring, Alonso has now earned 224 points and has strengthened his lead, with Iván Ortolá (who gained 7 points) second in the championship with 153 points, 71 behind the Colombian. Third is Dani Holgado, 157 points behind and fighting to continue to extend his lead for third place over Veijer, who is now 7 points behind.
