The French tennis player Gaël Monfils has been disqualified from the Oslo exhibition tournament of the Ultimate Tennis Showdown (UTS), an alternative circuit to the ATP, after “mildly” injuring the tournament supervisor, the UTS has confirmed.
At first, the tournament attributed the expulsion of the French tennis player to “a violation of the code of conduct due to his behavior towards the tournament supervisor”, without offering further details, and reported that his compatriot Lucas Pouille would take his place, measuring himself against the also French Benoit Paire.
Hours later, the UTS offered details of what happened. “Yesterday, an exchange of jokes in the locker room between Gaël Monfils and the tournament supervisor, Stéphane Apostolou, ended with a minor injury to the supervisor,” he revealed.
“The UTS is 100% convinced that there was no bad intention on Gaël's part, but because an official suffered an injury, no matter how minor, we felt that there was no alternative but to disqualify Gaël,” he said, ensuring that the Pasino “accepted the disqualification” and that both he and the supervisor “parted on amicable terms.”
